Synopsis

Pillow Chalk is a dramatic screenplay based on a short story from the book, SONNY WHITE’S URBAN FRUIT MANUSCRIPTS. It’s a tale of passion, love, deceit, drugs and race relations within the automotive plants and neighborhoods of the greater Detroit Metropolitan area.

The story centers around James Richards, a recovering drug addict and newly hired advisor at the Ford Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan. After being released from the River Rouge Plant due to drug dependency, James is granted an opportunity through the effort and influence of his father, retired former plant manager, John ‘Old Man’ Richards.

James Richards meets Darry Washington, a young, black employee of the Ford Van Dyke Plant assigned to his department, and quickly develops an illegal partnership. Darryl controls the majority of the marijuana clientele within the plant. Soon, he also begins providing cocaine.

Sally is a beautiful, seventeen year old high school senior and the daughter of James Richards. She meets Darryl at a family barbecue and they immediately begin an intense, passionate love affair. She hides the relationship from her father.

Linda Richards is the gorgeous, stay-at-home wife. She’s very liberal and doesn’t share her husband and father-in-law’s views on race. She discovers her daughter’s relationship with Darryl and reluctantly agrees to help conceal it from James.

The grandfather, John, is a retired Ford executive who’s permanently relocated to his previous summer home in Florida. He doesn’t approve of blacks mixing and migrating into suburban neighborhoods and cities. John is enraged when Darryl attends a family function and suspects his son, James, has relapsed into drug dependency.

PILLOW CHALK explores the seedy side of a Metropolitan Detroit automotive plant and the racial tensions that continue to exist more than fifty years since the race riots of the sixties.
